The Centre
We are an interdisciplinary core group designed to promote applied research, knowledge production and innovation in the field of development, international cooperation and humanitarian aid. We address partners such as the general public, non-governmental organisations, public and academic institutions, social enterprises and the private sector.
Discover moreThe Centre for Development and Cooperation carries out applied research projects on issues related to development, cooperation and humanitarian aid in the Global South as well as in relation to the Global North. Research projects are based on the long-standing experience of SUPSI researchers and mostly involve long-term partnerships with academic and non-academic institutions in Switzerland and abroad. Research activities contribute to the Agenda 2030 and are in line with the 6 principels of the Swiss Alliance for Global Research Partnerships.
Migration and society
Migration is a human phenomenon that has shaped societies and humanity throughout history. Migration is an increasingly global issue, linking people, places and futures, and is more and more discussed in the context of (sustainable) development and humanitarianism. In collaboration with other academic and non-governmental institutions, as well as public and private partners, the Centre participates in projects on migration processes at local and international levels, assessing their opportunities and challenges, focusing on people, involved societies and communities.

One Health – Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is a critical component of humanitarian response and global development, encompassing safe water, sanitation and hygiene. CDC is a leader in WASH research, emphasizing holistic approaches to water challenges. It takes a One Health approach that recognises the interdependence of human, animal, plant and environmental health.

The "Green it!" project is a public-private partnership aimed at promoting the development of appropriate technologies in the Global South, aligning with the goals of Agenda 2030. It is a collaborative effort between SUPSI and Green it Research & Technology PLC, a social enterprise established in Ethiopia.

The Centre for Development and Cooperation at SUPSI is closely linked to national and international institutions in the field of international cooperation. The Centre is engaged in research and training, aiming to contribute to the improvement the quality of life for the most vulnerable populations on the planet.
CAS in Development and Cooperation
The course aims to improve development practices and interventions in the Global South and North, by building critical skills and knowledge in the sector. The main target group are participants from NGOs, public and private institutes engaged in development issues as well as private interested individuals. The continuing education program is embedded in a Swiss professional and academic network on international cooperation, offering spaces for exchange and mutual learning.
CAS in Water Sanitation and Hygiene for humanitarian and developing contexts
The course is designed to provide professionals with a thorough understanding of the increasing complexity of the WASH sector. It provides students with up-to-date contextual and technical skills to plan, design and implement sustainable WASH activities and programmes within the framework of sector’s core principles, namely public health and equitable access to water supply and sanitation services. Designed to contribute to the Agenda 2030 (SDG 6) by focusing on all aspects of sustainable WASH interventions, the course is practice oriented. It aims to link theory and research findings with the reality/complexity of WASH practices on the ground.
